Frequently Asked Question

Manually Update a Chromebook
Last Updated 3 months ago

Chromebooks are setup to automatically download and install updates as necessary. However, sometimes devices that are unused for a period of time or don't remain on for long enough, are unable to complete these updates. In the event this happens it may be necessary to initiate a manual update of the device. Thankfully, this process is short and can be done by staff, students, or anyone else with an active Chehalis School District account.

How to Manually Update a Chromebook:

1. Open and login to the Chromebook (this can be done by anyone with an active Chehalis School District Email address)

2. Navigate to the Chromebook's application/start menu, usually located in the bottom left corner of the screen and open the Settings menu.

3. Once the in the Settings menu, navigate to the About ChromeOS tab on the left side of the window.

4. Near the top of this page there should be a section that says "Google ChromeOS" underneath which should be a version number. If it isn't already checking for updates (indicated by a spinning circular icon) you may need to click the Check for Updates button.

5. During this time, the Chromebook is still usable if needed. Once the update is complete (usually in 5-10 minutes), the spinning circle will be replaced with a check mark. From here, click on the Restart button and wait for the Chromebook to reboot itself.

Depending on how long it has been since the Chromebook has been updated, this process may need to be repeated multiple times until checking for updates yields a response saying "Your Chromebook is up to date".
